For many
book collectors the thrill in obtaining First Editions is unsurpassed. When you search for a book, you are able to let us know if you require a
first edition by ticking a small box on the search form.
However, difficulties
sometimes arise in determining what is a first edition. For some the term
will mean a copy from the first ever printing of that book. (Publishers often, but
not always will indicate that the book is a first edition on the
copyright page). For others it may mean the first edition of a particular
covering (eg soft back), or of a particular publisher (for example when
the original is subsequently published abroad).
Collectors generally use the term first edition to mean 'first
edition, 1st print run', though sometimes publishers use the term 'first
edition' to mean a book reprinted without changes, so you could see the
words "First Edition" on a book which has been reprinted a number of
times. These books may be technically a first edition but will not
satisfy all collectors.
Reputable book collectors are unlikely to accept
that any reprinted book as a genuine 'first'. If you do have particular need
for a first edition, and have any doubts about the
authenticity of a book please enquire first. We will then check with the
dealer and confirm that the
book is a first edition and a first print. If it is you can safely assume it
is a genuine 'first'.
